WHO declared Brazil a new epicentre of COVID-19 this week as its case count surpassed 330,000 and overtook the UK. Policy experts and healthcare workers worry the country’s leaders are too dismissive of coronavirus and won’t make changes needed to relieve strain on the healthcare system. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been accused of being one of the most dismissive world leaders when it comes to coronavirus, at one point referring to it as a “little flu”. He fired his Health Minister Luiz Henrique in April after Henrique opposed him and promoted quarantining. Henrique’s replacement, Dr. Nelson Teich, was allegedly forced by Bolsonaro to resign last week. Cases continue to rise rapidly across the country, from Sau Paulo to the Amazon.
