What are the cardiac consequences of COVID-19 infection in children?

Bottom Line:

Children may develop heart failure due to a severe inflammatory state caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection called multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).

Synopsis:

Typically, pediatric COVID-19 patients are minimally symptomatic. However, this study highlights 35 children (2-16 years old) who experienced acute heart failure that may be associated with COVID-19. The researchers postulate that this cardiac consequence was caused by multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), a complication of COVID-19 that may occur due to severe inflammation. Treatment with immune globulin was associated with improvement in heart function. In addition, all the pediatric patients survived and recovered.
