Considerations in the use of homemade masks to protect against COVID-19

Health Canada advised the public and healthcare professionals about the use of homemade masks to protect against COVID-19. They point out that homemade masks are not medical devices, are not tested, may not provide complete protection against virus-sized particles, do not seal well, and are not made of medical grade material. For healthcare professionals, they instead recommend N95 surgical respirators if possible as they create a tight seal with the user’s face and effectively prevent airborne particles from entering with appropriate eye protection. Finally, they do not recommend the use of masks in healthy individuals citing the potential risk of infection with improper use and a false sense of security.
