Wearing masks in public indoor spaces are now mandatory in eastern Ontario, including Ottawa, in Stage 2 of Ontario’s reopening plan. Exemptions will be made for children under two years of age and those who are unable to wear masks, for instance, due to medical reasons, or those who are unable to remove masks safely on their own. Face shields, while not equivalent to masks, can be an alternative to providing some protection for those unable to wear masks. The mandatory mask policy will be enforced, but the emphasis will be on education as opposed to penalization or fines which can be between $500-800.
