Health experts press Ottawa for a more ‘balanced approach’ to tackling COVID-19 pandemic

Eighteen health leaders in Canada have called for a more “balanced approach” to addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, stating that the current approach carries “significant risks to overall population health and threatens to increase inequities across the country.” Canada has had success in controlling COVID-19: it has reported fewer than 500 new cases a day since the second week of June, compared with 1,500-1,700 new cases at the peak. The Public Health Agency of Canada has said that the issues brought up in this open letter have been consistently recognized and that they are working with provincial and territorial partners and other stakeholders to address them. Those who criticize the letter’s position believe that controlling the virus is a necessary first step to helping the economy and improving the well-being of those who have been disproportionately harmed by COVID-19 itself and the lockdowns, namely poor and racialized Canadians.
