Coronavirus: US hits record high in daily cases

States like Florida are experiencing rates of infection not seen since April

On Thursday, the United states experienced an all-time high of 40,000 cases of coronavirus infections. The increase in new cases and hospitalizations has prompted Texas, Florida, and Arizona to pause their reopening plans. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the surge in cases is being driven by more young people testing positive, especially in southern and western states. Some states, including New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, have said that they will be requiring travellers from Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, and Utah to undergo self-isolation for 14 days when entering their states. In California, Governor Gavin Newsom has made it mandatory for people to wear face masks in public.
