Canada’s pandemic lockdown worked, says infectious disease doctor

While there are lessons to be learned, Canada’s extreme economic and social lockdown in response to the COVID-19 pandemic was the right move. Canada experienced a fraction of the projected cases and deaths in early worst-case scenario federal models. Federal modelling released in April forecasted that up to 80% of Canadians could contract COVID-19 and 300,000 could die, if no restrictions were implemented. Infectious disease expert, Dr Zain Chagla, says the country’s lockdown has minimized community spread and kept numbers of hospitalizations manageable. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, more than 80% of Canada’s deaths relating to COVID-19 have come from long-term care homes.
