The Prime Minister has announced today that passengers travelling by plane to, from, or within Canada will soon have to undergo temperature checks as part of the current screening measures in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This will be rolled out in a phased approach where the first phase will be for those travelling to Canada, the second phase for those travelling from Canada, and the last phase for those travelling within Canada. Passengers who are found to have a fever will not be permitted to board their flight, but they can rebook their flights at no extra cost as long as it departs at least 14 days later. Both the federal government and the Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam had previously resisted the idea of border screening measures as they were not found to be effective during the SARS epidemic. However, this comparison is limited by the fact that SARS had infected a relatively small number of people compared to the novel coronavirus.
