Toronto Mayor John Tory says that it may become mandatory for TTC riders to wear face masks. Currently, the Ford government recommends that riders wear face masks on public transit, but there are no emergency orders mandating their use. For public safety, the TTC has implemented several measures to ensure physical distancing is achieved through adding more buses on busy routes and blocking off select seats. As public transit ridership increases, these measures will become ineffective and other strategies such as staggering people’s return to work, work hours, and mandatory use of face coverings on public transit may need to be considered. Other cities have already announced that their transit riders must wear face masks and these cities include Brampton and Ottawa.
