Since elementary schools opened outside the Montreal area in Quebec two weeks ago, over 40 students and staff members have tested positive for COVID-19. The Laurentians and Monteregie regions had the highest number of cases, while schools within Montreal have been cancelled for the rest of the school year. However, Quebec’s director of public health assures the public that despite the cases in the schools, they have not resulted in any “significant negative impacts” and the situation is under control. Quebec’s premier states that the province’s biggest challenge continues to be staffing long-term care homes where around 64% of the province’s deaths have occurred.
