American President Donald Trump has called for the opening of religious places of worship such as churches, synagogues, and mosques by identifying them as essential services. Religious services have been pointed out in many cases as sources of outbreaks, such as the 61 cases and four deaths traced back to a rural Arkansas church in March. A draft version of the guidelines set for reopening released by the C.D.C had been rejected by the White House as administration officials worried that its suggestions to have all congregants wear masks and to suspend choir ensembles infringed on religious rights. Ultimately, the authority rests within the individual state’s governors on the decision to open religious places of worship.
