An extensive new COVID-19 screening strategy has been implemented in the Montreal area, considered to be one of the hardest hit areas in Canada by the pandemic. Montreal itself has over half of the confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths in Quebec, with outbreaks in 133 of its long-term care facilities. Other regions including Laval, the Monteregie, the Laurentians, and the Lanaudiere regions will also increase screening and testing. The current target for Quebec is to reach 14,000 tests per day and currently the province has reached 10,000 tests per day. Masks and social distancing continue to be strongly encouraged and many non-essential businesses in Montreal will be opening on May 25.
