While long-term care (LTC) homes in Ontario have been restricting in-person visits from families ever since March, the city of Ottawa has recently increased restrictions, no longer allowing families to visit their loved ones from the grounds of LTC facilities. This includes “window visits,” where family members come to say “hi” and stay connected by coming right up to the windows of their loved ones at LTC homes. This is occurring as many LTC facilities across the province and city continue to experience outbreaks of COVID-19. They are instead encouraging families to connect via digital meetings and phone calls. This new ban, however, has not been without controversy. City councillors have been coming out both for and against this new approach. As the pandemic continues to evolve, and the situation within LTC facilities changes, policies surrounding visitors will likely continue to change.
