Brazil is emerging as one of the world’s pandemic hot spots, as health care workers and institutions struggle to keep up with the overwhelming number of cases. For instance, in Rio state, six out of the 7 public hospitals equipped to treat COVID-19 cases are full. In the biggest city in the Amazon, Manaus, a cemetery had been forced to dig mass graves due to the number of deaths in the region. Sparse testing has been cited as a concern. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro remains insistent in his stance that broad social-distancing measures are not necessary, and that COVID-19 is a relatively minor disease.
