UN chief calls for greater protection for children caught up in COVID-19 crisis

UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for urgent action to support and protect the world’s children amidst the current pandemic. With nearly 190 countries imposing school closures, almost all students worldwide are out of school. While some schools have been able to offer distance learning, opportunities are not equally available for all students. As the crisis deepens, concerns have also been raised regarding adequate nutrition for children, safety at home, and security online. Governments are urged to mitigate harms by expanding social assistance, securing supply chains, and prioritizing continuity of service in education, school meal programming, and maternal and newborn care.
