According to U.S.-based company, 3M, which is a critical supplier for personal protective equipment to Canadian, U.S. and Latin America markets, the Trump administration has ordered them to exclusively supply medical-grade masks to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) while ceasing exports to international markets, including Canada. 3M has pushed back against this order, raising humanitarian implications and also potential retaliation as other countries may also limit their supply of masks to the U.S. 3M CEO Mike Roman has already stated earlier this week that the company is on track to increase N95 mask production by 40% (50 million masks) per month in 60 days to a total of 2 billion masks in 12 months. The American administration has also invoked the Defense Production Act in order to expedite the distribution of masks. The Cananadian Health Minister, Patty Hajdu has yet to comment on the Trump Administration’s order.
