Amidst the global shortages of personal protective equipment such as N95 respirators and masks, a group of researchers in Manitoba reported that they have found a way to safely decontaminate and reuse masks. This research, led by Dr. Anand Kumar, found that successful decontamination, without the loss of mask filtering ability, could be achieved using vaporized hydrogen peroxide or autoclaving. While vaporized hydrogen peroxide was effective in decontaminating all types of masks, its use is limited because few places having access to the technology in North America. Autoclaving, a commonly used method of sterilization that relies on heat and pressure, was found to work for some types of masks, particularly those made of fabric-type materials. While the results are promising, the researchers caution that this work should be duplicated by others before applying it in health care settings.
