As of Tuesday, the number of COVID-19 cases in Canada due to community transmission has surpassed the number of cases linked to travel. Community transmission refers to the spread of illness with no known link to travel or prior confirmed cases. As the vast majority of infections result in mild or moderate symptoms and disease transmission is possible even from asymptomatic patients, tracking where people came in contact with the virus is challenging. This shift in epidemiology represents a critical and rapidly closing window for action in managing this outbreak and limiting its spread. Now more than ever, it is imperative to follow the public health recommendations of social distancing, staying at home, and washing hands frequently to try to control this outbreak.
