Connecting with Loved Ones – Part 3

Connecting with your Household

            If you are fortunate enough to be quarantining with others – whether that’s a friend, family member, or roommate – you may have noticed that spending so much time together has changed things, for better or for worse. Some people might be finding it harder to get along, while others might be taking this as an opportunity to bond. Whatever the case may be, it’s important to make sure that your living situation is as positive as possible. This is especially true given that we currently don’t know when things will start to change back to ‘normal’.

            In addition to some of the fun virtual resources you can find in Part 1 of this series on connecting with friends and family, you can also turn to some non-virtual resources when you are at home with others to avoid spending even more time in front of a screen! Here are some activities and strategies we recommend trying out:

  1. Dust off those old board games and come together and give it a try! Some classics you might have include Monopoly, Scrabble, or Yahtzee. A few other fun games we recommend are Ticket to Ride, Avalon, and Settlers of Catan. If you don’t have these or don’t want to buy them, don’t worry! Check out Part 1 for links to the online versions.
  2. Try out a puzzle together! If you’re new to this, start off with a smaller one, and then build your way up to more difficult puzzles so you aren’t discouraged.
  3. If all you have is a deck of cards, check out this resource for some easy to learn card games!
  4. Spend time together doing things that you enjoy or want to learn. This can include at-home fitness classes, cooking, walking, or reading.
  5. Eat meals together! It’s a great way to have everyone come together and enjoy some food and talk about what they’ve done today and how they are feeling.
  6. In addition to time together, you also want to have some time apart, if possible. Try to schedule some time where you can be in separate rooms or areas so that you can relax a bit, reflect, or be productive.
